Not sure if this was meant to be an introductory story, but wasn't an origin story

Daredevil: Season One - Antony Johnston

This isn't so much a retcon as early tales: season one refers to a Marvel line going over the early years of characters.   That being said, this is a nice introduction to Daredevil, as it does tell a little about his early years, without the cheesiness some of the older comics are prone to or the old-fashioned 'girls are in the background' storylines.   That being said, there is no origin story, and not an introduction to Matt Murdock.   Some of the Battling Jack Murdock story is referenced, but never explained.

Matt gets horrified at the thought of patricide, without even bothering to explain that his father was murdered.   (And in some storylines, yes, Jack hit Matt - which ties into the issue of patricide.   A minor kills his father to save his brother from the beatings.)

Oh, yes, it's a nice introduction to Daredevil.   Matt Murdock?   Not to much.   HIs motivation to become a lawyer and the love triangle between him, Karen and Foggy is weirdly depicted: it's a major theme in this but in reality, Foggy and Matt went though hell over her, both of them unsure of how to parse out the fact that they were both in love with her.   (And she hero worshipped Daredevil which made things awkward, and somehow this graphic novel nailed that: every time Foggy complained to Matt about Karen obsessing over Daredevil, I cringed because it was that awkward.   Intentionally.)  In this, Matt knows that Foggy's going to propose, and he thinks he's in love with her in one panel.   In the original stories, he was convinced he was a danger to her because Daredevil and created an identical twin - Michael Murdock - who was a total sexist jackass to push her away.   (I think some guilt over his best friend being in love with her too was involved, to be honest.)   Instead, he just seems to mention it in one panel and totes be over it in the next.   It was super weird.   Super, super weird.

Karen got her own moment to shine, though, and overall I really enjoyed this.   It delved into Matt's Catholicism, and that is part of why I love him, part of why he's so strict about his own moral code.   I loved the art when it depicted DD, I love that it showed him going from the yellow costume - which I did not like, truth - to my favorite: the red costume.

I liked it, loved it, a lot more than I hated some aspects.   I wouldn't suggest this unless someone was interested in Daredevil, and not his double life, or unless they'd already read the origin story.    It's bizarre how much fairly basic stuff is ignored given how deeply they delve into Matt/Karen/Foggy.

Oh, and here's Matt:

And I just don't understand why this is so un-Matt like when the artist nails DD:

Because just yes to that!

Still, the gaff with getting The Purple Man's powers wrong also pretty basic.   One half star off for that, one half star off for the art being so on and off.
