Grimlock ♥ Ultra Magnus

I'm a well read grad student who's bluntly honest about all things, although I try to be most honest about myself.

Hacktivist!

Hacktivist - Jackson Lanzing, Colin Kelly, Alyssa Milano, Marcus To

Hacktivist is exactly what it sounds like, hackers who are also activists.   It sounded like it would get all preachy to me, but it was part of the BOOM! Studios humble bundle - new comics tomorrow, so I'd like to get a couple more read today, to be honest - and I've loved all of them so far.

I did give it the side eye when I realized that Alyssa Milano was the creator.   I'm pretty relieved that she didn't write it: two other writers did, working closely with their artist.   It was beautiful, both the story itself and the illustrations.   Ed and Nate own YourLife, which is like Facebook just... y'know, fictional.   Ed is very good at patterns and not so good at human interaction; Nate seems like a genius, although not on Ed's level, who can deal with humans in general.   Nate is the CEO, makes more money, but deals with the public relations.    Ed gets to just play with his patterns.   (This isn't as bad as it sounds: Nate is paid to deal with what neither of them particularly want to, and Ed can't seem to deal with, and they're both billionaires.   Also, it's not stated, but I'm guessing Ed has some kind of autism.   He's a well drawn out, full character, though, and I liked him much more than I liked Nate, who was kind of an asshole in my opinion.)

Anyway, they work as hacktivists behind the scenes, as what people assume is a huge hacking group at some points.   Save Yourself, however, is just Ed and Nate (not a spoiler as this is made pretty clear from the beginning.)  The real trouble starts brewing when the US government blackmails them into working for them by saying they know all about Save Yourself.

Although things just get more and more interesting once the government gets involved.  I didn't see the ending coming, either.   And this one really surprised me.   I didn't expect to like it much, and I just adored it.   I love when that happens, though, so hoping for more from this creative team when the new comics come in.
