I'm a well read grad student who's bluntly honest about all things, although I try to be most honest about myself.

Dead Letters Vol. 1 - Christopher Sebela

This is an interesting take on a sweet little noir mystery, but it's not even the general idea that makes this graphic novel one of the best stories I've read lately.   It's all the little details, like why Maia is playing the role she does, how that works out in the end, and the way that the main character - Sam - can't even remember his last name when he first wakes up, and how the reader learns all the necessary information along with him.

He's caught between two gang lords, Ma and Jones, and Maia is giving him orders.   Somehow, Sam remembers the feeling of being stuck between criminals, of danger, knows what to do: muscle memory appears to be stronger than the amnesia that slowly lifts throughout these four volumes.

(I think the first volume is only three, but I got four in a humble bundle, so...)

It's the art.   The other reason you should read this?   It's the art that is a perfect complement to the story, that is some of the most evocative, emotive imagery that I've seen in a long while.

Consider me in awe.   BOOM! Studios has a newfound fan.
