I'm a well read grad student who's bluntly honest about all things, although I try to be most honest about myself.
This is a dystopian world, where people are either Family, Serf, or Waste. The Waste are cannon fodder, the Serfs sort of middle class, and the Family the upper echelon. Each Family has a Lazarus, a defender who can't die - or at least it's so hard to kill them they might as well be invincible.
In the Carlyle family, that Lazarus is Forever - or Eve - a daughter of the Carlyle Family. However, she doesn't know she was created and believes herself to be a biological family member. The problem? The Morray Lazarus is either a robot or a cyborg. So, does one do this to one member of the Family? How do you choose which one? (Since Forever was a Lazarus when she was fourteen, and in fact since she was born, you can't assume loyalty or anything in their character since you don't know. Not unless you build her, like the Carlyle Family did for her.) If they aren't all Family members, then shouldn't Forever suspect there's something wrong with her?
More to the point, even if there isn't a hole in the world building and this is explained later, this shouldn't be a question I still have after finishing the first volume. Now, why the four stars? Overall, the concepts of structure was solid, the character interaction and characters themselves were fabulous, and it was an enjoyable, compelling read. The art wasn't my favorite style, but it was technically very good. It fit the storyline perfectly.
Thus, four stars. I'm not sure I'll continue, but I'm glad I got to read this first volume. I'm going to break from my humble bundle graphic novels and see if I can work through the migraine and vertigo and finish DIMB now, though!
