I'm a well read grad student who's bluntly honest about all things, although I try to be most honest about myself.
Second day of Readercon.
The dealer’s room opened at three. I got so many robot related books, some not robot related. After purchasing one, the dealer told me that the author was here, but I have a signed up conflict. Seeing as it’s Nicholas Kaufmann, who’s had his review up on my blog, I may be a minute or two late to track down Scott Edelmen and get my book signed! (Nix that. The description of him as tall and wearing red pants narrowed it down. I spotted bright red pants, noted the tallness of the gentleman wearing them, and boom. The collection which includes a robot story has signage. Yay!)
Another author is going to be in the dealer’s room tomorrow, and I bought her book and am getting it signed.
And I got the second in Lev Grossman’s book signed for my friend. I was supposed to get it done last year, but he had an emergency and had to cancel. I told her I was holding it onto it to see if he came back. Not only did he come back, he signed it to my friend, and I asked if he minded saying happy birthday to her. He said it wasn’t a problem. (I also told him it was for her birthday and it was a year late, as I’d been hoping to get him sign last year and that I was sorry he hadn’t been able to make it. He said he’d been sorry, too.) I go on about this because I was worried that he wouldn’t make it this year, and he did. I am so, so happy I got this signed for her! Yay, yay, yay!
On the other hand, I had a couple panicked moments. I lost Ultra Magnus and someone found him in the con suite for me. I also realized that I wanted American Elsewhere signed and I couldn’t find a copy in the dealer’s room! I was less panicked about having a faulty copy of Dying is My Business as the part was from another book, and the correct part is on Kaufmann’s site. I do have a copy of both books on hold at the local B&N as I won’t have time to get it tonight, so I’ll do it tomorrow before the convention starts up again. Although, I might keep the faulty copy of the book as a misprint/collector’s item. (Suggestions about the Kaufmann? Do I hang onto the tautly copy as a curiosity and get it signed?) I’m going to ask Bennett to sign American Elsewhere after a panel about how to be a better reader that I was planning on going to before I realized he’d be on the panel.
I got a whole slew of books signed, too, including one I got for free for signing up to give blood tomorrow morning. (The book is about a surgeon, too, so I spoke to her about how interested I was in that aspect since three doctors in the immediate family. Including one surgeon.) I always make sure not to give blood right before Readercon so I can give her, too. The gentleman who runs the blood drive here remembers me as someone who’s reliable to give. And he can also give platelets and I’ve always been nervous after reading about safety issues and he says he’s done it a bunch, and was fine. I just really needed to hear that in person. I think I’m gonna give platelets next time around - not here, since they don’t do it here - but right near me.
I spoke to Gemma Files who remembered me from previous years, and not only that, Kaufmann recognized my name when he saw that I’d signed up and he said, ‘I bet that’s the Transformers girl!’ He saw me wearing the same Optimus Prime shirt, and he was laughing about that. I showed off my Bee backpack, too.
I meant to speak to Nightwing last year, as she makes beautiful clothes. She had the one I was thinking about - or something similar - and I wanted it to be silver rather than copper. Since it would be a little pricey, I want exactly what I want, y’know? But she explained how she did it, and that it only came out that way. I got her card, and I’m probably going to commission something in plain black and then do my own painting on it since we were talking about that.
I’m finding the panels are more hit and miss than in previous years for me, but more hit than miss. Anyway, I’m having a blast. l’m sad that it’s close to closing tonight, but I’m super excited about the Meet the Prose party. It was amazing last year, although the other years I left before that party because it was so late and I was so tired.
I’m still tired. But I may go up and get some coke from the con suite after Max Gladstone’s reading, just to get some caffeine in me.
