I'm a well read grad student who's bluntly honest about all things, although I try to be most honest about myself.
Sooo... I've been looking for the perfect book journal, because while I've been listing the title/date read/stars/thoughts for a while, I wanted to start fresh with BL.
So here are my thoughts/projects for this weekend. One, cut and paste each review in a massive Pages document, hopefully including GIFs. Save.
Two: come up with color coding system. Which is going to be insane. So here's my 'journal' spin, and what I did with notes for my college thesis. I had an insane amount of color coded notes - each color indicated book/theme matchup. If it was about insanity in Wide Sargasso Sea? That was, say, blue. Insanity in the Bakkhai? Yellow. If it was about the portrayal of women in Wide Sargasso Sea? Red. In Bakkhai? Purple. And on and on. There was an insane master list. It was actually really effective. I could find the type of quote I needed from the book I needed really, really easily. But it's really, really time consuming.
Still, I bought three hundred ruled index card for two fifty at Office Depot, and I'm going to find a box/boxes. I think I'm going to organize them by color so I know what I want. One star robot book? Orange Five star robot book? Yellow. One star Transformer book? Red. (For Rodimus. I have a system based on characters!) Five Star Transformer book? Blue.
And yes, the characters that I hate? Their colors are one stars. The more I like a character, the higher the star/the more I like the genre. It's going to get confusing since there's some overlap, but...
So far, I have this system in mind:
1-5 star in these genres: non-fiction, graphic novels, Transformers, mystery, fantasy, sci-fi, horror, and general fiction. I'll add as needed. If I have too many colors, I'll set up a one through five star color system and then organize by genre.
On the cards, I'll have title, author/translator (and original language if other than english/whether I read it in French or not), date read, general thoughts, and actual star rating. (I'm rounding up/down because if I do a color coded system by genre and star rating, I will go insane if I add half-stars.)
I also want to reorganize my books, at least the physical ones, so that they're by size/format (mass market/trade paperback/hardcover/graphic novel/oversized books/comics), and then put the ones I want to read first up front, as well as organizing by genre. This excludes mass markets/oversized/whatever in the graphic novel/transformers/star trek sections since I already have those. I'm thinking of doing a media tie-in section as well. Plus organize my comics by full runs I haven't read to make it easier to find what I want to read in the proper order. And possibly organize by company/franchise, since I have so many Marvel/Buffy/Transformer comics. I hope to have two bookshelves - skinny ones - set next to each other free so that they can be for 'books read' so it's even easier to find books I haven't, or have, if I want to read something in particular/re-read.
So... this isn't ambitious. At all -_-
