I'm a well read grad student who's bluntly honest about all things, although I try to be most honest about myself.

Review - The First

The First (The Returned) - Jason Mott

This is a very, very short story, a vignette that takes a look at a side character from Jason Mott's The Returned.

Despite the shortness, it was a bitter story that turned to something beautiful and loving, and it was poetry while it detailed how someone would feel if their loved one were returned.   In this case, Emily's fiancé, Edmund, is killed by a bus - and brought back a year after.

Emily has finally started to let him go, and then she sees him on the TV, back, impossibly back.   This is her story, as least as much as it is his, and I found myself surprised by how moved I was, as this type of thing is normally not the type of thing I enjoy reading about.   Mott has a way with characters, and a way with words, however, and I look forward to reading more by him.
