I'm a well read grad student who's bluntly honest about all things, although I try to be most honest about myself.
For the most part, the characters were in character. There were a couple of lines, a couple of times, that the speech pattern felt off, but I'm very particular about that, and overall it was good. It did take me out of the story once or twice, so I am mentioning it.
It was also fairly obvious who the villain of the piece was to me early on. There are enough red herrings to keep me guessing a little, but I also felt like the author tried a little too hard to make it obvious that someone else was at fault so I was suspicious of that line of thought anyway. (It was also a less dramatic choice, which made me feel like it might be a false lead.)
There were some really cute moments, like when Bones has his 'I'm a doctor, dammit, not a-' line, and other such winks to canon. Still, it was brain candy, and read like brain candy. As far as that goes, though? You could do far worse than this book. I was craving some Nu!Trek, and this gave it to me.
Looking forward to the other three books in this series.
