I'm a well read grad student who's bluntly honest about all things, although I try to be most honest about myself.
The acting was superb, the movie was gorgeous, and I loved it. I didn't, however, get why it was in black and white, mostly because I thought Joss would have done more with that aspect, hitting me with contrasts like the shower scene in Psycho that were visually stunning.
Instead, I couldn't help but wonder why he didn't use color, since he's so brilliant with color. It felt like a loss to me, and I was disappointed that it was in black and white. (I used to be a color snob, but ever since I saw the Day the Earth Stood Still, and loved the movie, I haven't been. Psycho, the original, was brilliant, but this didn't quite do it for me!)
Still, definitely worth seeing! I highly recommend it, despite this one flaw. Like I said, the visuals themselves - from the main scenes, to these brilliant acrobatic dancers in one party scene - were absolutely brilliant. It was one choice that I didn't agree with, that I didn't think made the movie better, but rather detracted; it also was one choice that didn't overwhelm the, well, overwhelmingly positive about this movie.
I suggest it most of all to those who are already Whedon fans. I think they'll squee over the cast of actors that are already familiar to them. Even non-Whedonistas - and male versions - should be able to sit back and enjoy this movie - so long as they're into Shakespeare.
