I'm a well read grad student who's bluntly honest about all things, although I try to be most honest about myself.
So, sighs, the thought experiment is that Israel annexes all of palestine, and gives the palestinians all civil but not political rights. That way, it remains a Jewish state, which cares for the palestinians.
So first of all, this would only cause everyone to call this what it was: apartheid. I suspect few, if any, in Israel truly want that. Furthermore, why burden the Israel civil society with the cost and burden of gaza, when hamas turned that into a hellhole by focusing almost solely on terrorism, which is the main cause of the blockade, the shitty economy, and the rampant homelessness because they pour all their concrete into terror tunnels instead of homes for their civilians? Which, yes, many are destroyed because hamas attacked Israel and Israel responded, often times targeting hamas bases near homes.
Israel simply doesn't want, or need, that burden. No, thanks, they can look after themselves after all the terrorism they sometimes literally lob Israel's way.
So, yes, he admits this would never fly except as an outrageous thought experiment, but he's dumping the effects of the shitty government - by the pa and hamas - on Israel. No, thanks. They're not children, and they can take care of themselves. But everyone really, really loves infantilizing them to demonize Jews and Israel.
Fuck that noise.
Let me also say that when I call gaza a hellhole, I do not think that is inherent in the state, the people or even their government. I think it's a hellhole because the economy is in free fall because hamas prized terrorism and dead Jews above almost anything else: they ran the country into the ground, and gazans voted for this. I may be disappointed in those choices, but I truly believe gaza can be beautiful if gazans oust hamas, and chooses a government who will put the civil society above all else. I believe there can be freedom of movement if the terrorist attacks stop. I believe that the incredibly high level of antisemitism can be lowered. (And yes, I know, I've said it before: some people in Israel are racists against Arabs/palestinians, but every state or country struggles with racism.) Unlike, say, Trump who believes that because people who are different than him automatically make countries shitholes, I do not believe that. I believe gaza is living in an appalling state that has been called literal hell by its own citizens, and thus it is currently a hellhole due to tragically mismanaged government. I hate the terrorism that comes from gaza, but I wish the people would be better governed and had better quality of life and that gaza rises to be a beautiful place to live.
