I'm a well read grad student who's bluntly honest about all things, although I try to be most honest about myself.
I had high hopes, given this writer and the first issue.
Not so much, though. It's not only depressing, I don't think there was much of a point to this. And if this was the point Ellis was trying to make, he could have done so without dragging it out in six freaking issues.
That being, the art is fabulous, especially given that the artist was having life issues, which is why this book was so continually delayed. So not only was I not that into this story, I had to wait months for another interconnected piece. And don't get me wrong: I'm not shaming the artist. Life issues are a legit reason for a comic being delayed. What I am saying is that if this was written in a way that interested me more, the delays wouldn't have been such a big deal. I"d have remembered what happened in anticipation. The writing, combined with the delays, meant that I had to struggle to remember what was going on. What I can't understand is how badass Karnak came off in the first issue, and how he seemed to be a different character in all the others. I suspect the delays degraded my memory of him, which meant I had an overinflated memory of issue one Karnak.
Basically... the delays didn't help. They didn't kill this for me, either. The artist more than made up for the lapses in months going by with the absolutely stunning art, however. He did his part. It was mostly the writing I couldn't get into.
