I'm a well read grad student who's bluntly honest about all things, although I try to be most honest about myself.

Love, love, love the Champions

Champions (2016-) #6 - Mark Waid, Humberto Ramos

They're exciting, new and fresh.   The best thing is that they think about problems in a realistic way: what's the fallout and how do they minimize it, and help with the fallout when it's unavoidable?   There's a charming, truly heroic, quality to this line of thought.   They're thinking about the people they might hurt without trying.

It's not that the older heroes don't think about it, but they've justified the fallout.   Maybe they're cynical - or maybe they're just being realistic.   The more time they help building up what has been torn down in their fights, the more opportunity they give villains to do even more damage: damage that can widen the breadth and scope of physical damage to the world, or maim and slaughter innocent people.

Still, the differences get even more vast as the Champions question how long the good will towards them can last.   What if someone does get hurt on their watch, or things go wrong, or they get blamed for something they can't control?

Which is when a new group - a group branded as The Champions for hire by those hiring them - come into play.   They're young, they're powerful - and they're completely and utterly mercenary, with a cruel streak to boot.   So when they play they're childish, and cruel games, with human lives, well, it's no surprise they manage to get the Champions caught up by the end of the issue.

This is also not a Champions-centric issue, no matter what the title says.   We see the Champions wondering about their future, and then spend time with a new group of children brought to life to wreak havoc with the Champions.    And while it was adorable seeing Vision pick up Viv - because Vision is always adorable to me, even when he's super freaky - there just wasn't that much of Viv.   Or the rest of the group.   Which is actually perfectly okay with me: Waid is very carefully setting up a larger challenge for his group of heroes, and I was enthralled seeing this new threat come to life.   The characters were mean, and selfish, and you weren't meant to like them at all.   And I didn't.   But , see, getting to know just how much I dislike them?  It's going to make the Champions handing this group their collective asses so much more satisfying in the end.

Hopefully, the month-long wait until issue seven won't seem like it's that long.
