Grimlock ♥ Ultra Magnus

I'm a well read grad student who's bluntly honest about all things, although I try to be most honest about myself.

Takes place in hell, yet is uplifting

Midnighter and Apollo (2016-) #4 - Steve Orlando, Fernando Blanco

Because it's all about hope: Apollo's hope that he can outwit Neron, and Midnighter's hope that he can rescue Apollo.  Midnighter backs up his hope, with determination, with stamina, and he punches and kicks his way into the darkest parts of hell, where Apollo is being held, determined to punch and kick his way out again.

There wasn't that much humor.   It was more like an incredible amount of gory and inventive violence.   Still, I was rooting for Apollo and I found myself hoping he would get to Apollo.

I find myself continuing to hope he'll get Apollo out of hell and to safety.

There is one line I have to share, that seems to illustrate the hope, the love, I feel in this comic.   Midnighter has tracked down the people who have bartered away Apollo's soul as part of a debt, and they are impressed by how far Midnighter has come.   If he forgets about Apollo, he can join them...

Instead, he kills one of them, and says this: "No world exists where someone could hurt Apollo and escape me.   Do you understand?"

Yes, yes, I do.   I found that line lovely, not because of the implied violence, but because of the protective instincts, how much he loves Apollo.   He's not just saying he'll hurt them back; he's saying he'll go anywhere, find them anywhere, because he loves Apollo that much.

I'm not sure I'm properly explaining why this touched me so much, but it did.   I'm crushed, though.  Only two more issues!   I hope DC decides to run another Midnighter series, although I suspect the sales - not enough to keep an ongoing running, and probably not enough to start up another one after this, or start up an ongoing - means that he'll be a guest star at best for the near future.   What a shame!   Orlando, in particular, writes Midnighter with aplomb.   I'm going to take my cue from Midnighter, and hope, hope that Orlando continues to get a chance to write this character!
