I'm a well read grad student who's bluntly honest about all things, although I try to be most honest about myself.
This whole series superimposes action on the trauma Gotham Girl is going through after the ending of last issue. It's wrenching to watch her, even more so as no one seems to realize what she's going through, even more so when you realize this is exactly what Virginia Vision was going through in King's previous series.
This could have been similar, could have felt exactly like what was going on in Vision. Instead, Batman realized what was happening, as he'd had a similar experience. But it isn't Batman who helps Gotham Girl. It's Bruce Wayne talking to Claire, the girl behind Gotham Girl. It's the people, not the icons, who have experienced similar trauma and it's by letting her know that she isn't alone that Bruce gets to Claire.
It's touching and honestly, I cried then. Not while she was going through the trauma and trying to find some sort of relief, but when Bruce gave her a way by understanding: the buildup of the pressure was intense, and emotional, but it was that small kindness and that small give that undid me.
Bravo, King, bravo!
