I'm a well read grad student who's bluntly honest about all things, although I try to be most honest about myself.
I got this because it didn't make sense not to take advantage of the buy two, get the third free sale at Newbury. That being said, I searched for something, anything, and found nothing else I was interested in. I'd only read one Doom Patrol story, which involved Doom Patrol vs The Suicide Squad. It wasn't my favorite Squad story and I didn't care much for anyone in Doom Patrol except Robotman. Would that be enough to get me through? The cover I have features Robotman.

I figured, with him on this cover he would feature prominently. I didn't notice the mature reader warning and figuring this was a Young Animal imprint that it might be for children. (Yes, even despite the higher price. Most children comics are less, not more.) I didn't know much about Young Animal: I'd seen the imprint label bandied about, but this was the first comic coming out from them. I have more interest in Marvel than in DC, so I didn't track down more information, which I promptly did after finishing this comic. It was whip smart, fun, weird, and not at all for children. It wasn't super violent, nor titillating, although I suspect it will get, at the very least, moire violent in the future to earn that mature rating. I'd say so far I wouldn't give this to children because I"m not sure they'd fully process this, and it will lead to the expectation that they can read further issues - and I"m not sure they'll be able to if it's going to get as violent and/or raunchy as I suspect it will. Then again, it's a new imprint, first issue ever, so it's hard to tell.
After reading about this imprint, I am eager to read more. I'll probably wait to get the graphic novels out of the library with the exception of Doom Patrol which I will keep my eye out for in the future. I'm still at least partially - perhaps mostly - interested because of Robotman. I haven't made up my mind on percentages, but I'm interested in both the story and this particular character. I suspect I wouldn't have picked it up if I hadn't seen Robotman on the cover, and I suspect I wouldn't have been as interested in the story if it wasn't at least partly about him. No, I pretty much know this much is true. I'd have still liked it, but may not have been determined to pick up issue two. I'm certain I will if I see it now.
Not knowing much about Doom Patrol was no loss: I didn't know much about Robotman, or his colleagues, and I never felt lost or out of place. This doesn't seem to be about erasing what came before, but rather making it easily accessible to those who don't want to wade through Doom Patrols' past. Again, I can't say for certain with my limited Doom Patrol knowledge, but I suspect fans would have gotten some inside jokes/art/something here. I didn't and I don't mind: this stands on its own, it's slick, it's new, and it's engaging. That's enough for me.
One more comic and not enough willpower to stay up and read it. I get cranky if I don't get my sleep. I'll finish with Spawn Kills Everyone! #1 tomorrow, then move onto the Vision reread. For now, I'm satisfied that I'm mostly caught up. I'll probably get behind in the next couple weeks, then frantically catch up in one weekend.
