Grimlock ♥ Ultra Magnus

I'm a well read grad student who's bluntly honest about all things, although I try to be most honest about myself.

Gives me a new ship!

Daredevil Legends, Vol. 1: Yellow - Jeph Loeb, Tim Sale, Richard Starkings

I don't usually ship Karen/Matt, but this makes me ship them.   Hard.   This is pretty much Daredevil: Season one, done better.   It's pretty much the same stories, but whereas DD: Season One told it as if it were any other comic retelling, this one added an emotional level that made me far more invested in the stories.   (And, I have to say, I enjoyed the actual dialogue and art far more, as well, so I felt it was all around a superior comic.)

This is his first year told as a memoir of sorts, graphic novel style.   Karen Page has died, and as a form of catharsis, Matt Murdock - Daredevil, the Man Without Fear - writes a series of letters to his dead lover.   The way she died was tragic, as was what happened to her before that: her drug addiction seemed to follow her to her death, especially with what she sold to get another fix.   That was bound to taint her relationship with Matt when she ended up back with him, and it did.   Even when he forgave her completely, her own sense of guilt followed her around, made her think that he thought he was better than her.

Yellow strips away all that.   Matt wants to remember her young and innocent, and he does.   Going over when he first met her made sense then, because she was innocent then, full of joy, untouched by the future which will eventually weigh her down and kill her.   And he does.   This is a beautiful testament to Karen Page - and so much more.   Because the angle demands an emotional connection, and response, it allows us to see the small moments: Karen and Foggy and Matt bowling, or meeting at bars, just palling around in general.   It build s a fuller experience of all three as people, and makes their love triangle more intimate and, quite frankly, less annoying.

It made that emotional connection with me, and although Matt may be remembering the past with rose colored glasses, the simplicity of how much Foggy and Matt and Karen cared for each other was sharply felt, compelling, and charming.   A far superior introduction to Daredevil than Season One.

I still had issues with The Purple Man:

I suspect The Purple Man's powers changed over the years, and so I'm not detracting stars; the writers probably did what they were told to, and wrote it as it was originally written.   That being said, some retcon to match his current powers, or an editor's note about it, would have been nice seeing as they do editor's notes all the time.   Even a note at the end of the comic explaining the discrepancy would have been much appreciated.
