I'm a well read grad student who's bluntly honest about all things, although I try to be most honest about myself.
This nailed it for me. I mean, really, everything about this graphic novel: it was exciting, it had plenty of action, a hell of a lot of character development and a ton of mythology, including some that I'd, embarrassingly, forgotten. (I haven't read my Greek myths in a while, although I have read Euripides and some more modern day retcons recently.)
Despite the Greek mythology and Amazon connection, I've never managed to get that into Wonder Woman. While Troy has introduced me to some lovely DC graphic novels - and by lovely I mean gorgeous and brilliant - and while I loved the one that we buddy read on Wonder Woman, well, she still wasn't a favorite character.
There was a pure hearted innocence to her in this volume. I very much recall Troy describing her as a warrior for peace, and she very much is in Perez's run. She's not innocent in a naive way, but rather in the way she believes in the best of people in general, even when some of them have shown her their worst. She's innocent in that she doesn't give into temptations or fear, but rather maintains her integrity despite living in a modern day world that is confusing and unknown and even frightening. There is no faustian deal set in front of other than the world itself, and that's enough: many people would be swept away by the idea of being worshipped as hero or in the luxuries - and what must seem like frivolities to Princess Diana.
She's not tempted, partly because she's so focused on her just cause that she barely seems to notice these temptations. Instead, anything mentioned is usually as a disappointment: the traffic jams, the noise, the things that make life so easy for us only seem to confound and frustrate Diana.
And I'm rambling. I had other thoughts. She's not contorted into really weird positions. She's 'fat' by comparison to todays super heroines, even her own recent incarnation, but I think that only makes her more lovely. Both of these. She looks and feels real, and, man, is that a breath of fresh air. She's beautiful and dare I say sexy. She outdoes a bunch of recent superhero comics in this regard.
Pretty much yes, more of this please. I've got a new favorite character.
