I'm a well read grad student who's bluntly honest about all things, although I try to be most honest about myself.
So a customer walked up to pay for something, and starts this:
"Just out of curiosity, are you pregnant?"
My heart immediately started racing, my palms got hot and sweaty, and I'm sure I got a wide-eyed panicked look. Despite me being utterly grossed out by each step of making babies - and having them - I haven't quite yet come to an emotional resolution about not having any.
I kinda secretly want a relationship - romantic, sexual - and a family.
So other than being creepy - why, why are you curious if a stranger is having a baby, and what business is it of yours? - I was kinda freaking out. In what I thought was a calm voice, I kinda stuttered this:
"No, why would you think that?"
I think I freaked him out - fair play, creepy dude! - because he stuttered not even a whole sentence back and vaguely motioned at my dress.
"it's just the style of the dress."
"Oh."
He paid and left. But, yeah, creepy, creepy, creepy, so dudes, please don't be that guy. If you don't know someone, if you're encountering them that briefly, this is not an appropriate question. It's none of your fucking business in fact.
I think I'm over most of the nerves, and am at just mad that some random stranger dredged this up now.
