I'm a well read grad student who's bluntly honest about all things, although I try to be most honest about myself.
Deadpool wants, and tries to be a hero, quivers a bit, then tries to help a messiah that he's told will save humanity - but might really destroy it when he comes. The problem is that the whole thing is that Wilson is supposed to be a mercenary who cracks jokes, who takes money for kills because, y'know, no real morality.
How can someone misunderstand a character so badly? And how can they do that, and be so highly praised for their long-running series about him?
I mean, the fuckery with Al? That's just plain messed up and problematic to boot, but I stepped back and was like, 'okay, but Willson isn't a good person so the fact that it's messed up and problematic makes sense.' (Except the part where Al insists there's a hero and a good person buried way, way deep in Wilson. I mentioned that at Readercon and a Deadpool fan laughed and said, 'no, there's not. It's Deadpool.')
But this? This is almost like Joe Kelly is fucking with his readership. It's like he said, 'can I get away with satirizing how awful Deadpool really is by turning him into some savior?' The results are embarrassingly bad. Even when I was alone, and I knew I was alone, I'd be reading, and look around to make sure no one caught me reading this dreck.
Must read next volume to see if this can possibly get any worse. Yes, I'm that much of a masochist.
