I'm a well read grad student who's bluntly honest about all things, although I try to be most honest about myself.
And yes, adding a black character who very well might have been at this one battle is intriguing, and there were some nice moments, some people who treated him well, but it had so much racism and bullshit and sexism that I just couldn't.
Or maybe it was that this was a press that's known for fantasy/horror, and this just felt like plain old fiction to me. I was expecting something different, something else entirely, so this didn't quite satisfy. I realized this about halfway through but held out hope for more.
Disappointing. I normally am very fond of this writer, but I won't be reading more about this character unless I read tremendous reviews of the other stories.
