I'm a well read grad student who's bluntly honest about all things, although I try to be most honest about myself.
When young, out-of-time Scott finds out his father is not only alive, but dating a cat-skunk lady, and is a captain of a space pirates crew, Scott does the only logical thing. Who wouldn't go with Chris Summers, aka Corsair, and his Starjammers?
I figured maybe the space pirate thing will make it more palatable, as I've never really liked Cyclops. It turns out this was a fun ride. The space pirates make everything better. Also, seeing Scott get punched in the mouth by his father is amusing to me. (It's not as bad as it sounds; it's the only way to save their lives at that point.)
It makes Scott young and vulnerable and confused, and even better, likable. It gives him something to worry about - his father isn't only living a dangerous lifestyle, but also possibly a drug addict. It feels real. I mean, other than the space pirates. Because sadly space pirates don't exist.
The art is also beautiful. And the way that Scott and Hepzibah, his new almost-Step-mother banter, or the way he and his dad banter, is lovely. So is how Chris navigates trying to be a father after all the horrors he's seen, or the way that he doesn't know how to be a father because he hasn't been up until then.
