I'm a well read grad student who's bluntly honest about all things, although I try to be most honest about myself.
So, I'm kinda crushed. This series has ended :(
Sadness! It was brilliant, it had a diverse cast - almost half women at some points, one Latina, and getting into the sexuality of all the members of this cast is just confusing me. Three characters who are bisexual, two gay characters in a relationship, and one lesbian. And one not-as-straight-as-she-thinks-she-is young woman. Apparently.
But, again, this wouldn't make a five star review. The art was mind-blowing, though. This is one of my favorite panels:
It's also incredibly well written. I should have seen what Leah and other-kid-Loki were, but I didn't. I suspected something more was going on with other-kid-Loki, but Leah? I was a little stunned. And there are existential issues: does it matter if you're a constructed man made to love someone, or if you're made to love someone, if that love is real?
And Noh-Varr and Loki in particular go through a lot of... changes. Loki grows, and Noh-Varr, while not the most mature person in the first place, seems to devolve, before he can grow. Where he is at the end is left up in the air, while Loki seems to have a concrete path ahead of him. It's... nice. Not everything is wrapped up, but you can see where things are leading, and it all feels real.
These characters have been through so much, they see so much of the ugly truth, but they remain optimistic. It's incredible, and it's poignant, and I don't think I can recommend this series enough.
