Grimlock ♥ Ultra Magnus

I'm a well read grad student who's bluntly honest about all things, although I try to be most honest about myself.

Gets better!

Young Avengers, Vol. 2: Alternative Cultures - Kate Brown, Kieron Gillen

Or at the very least, more messed up.   Teddy and Billy - Hulkling and Wiccan - are split up, because hints have led Teddy to believe he may be in love with Billy because Billy's been using magic.   Not intentionally, but as another character says, that doesn't help the existential horror Teddy's living with right now.

All of that is bad enough, although the fact that his therapist is Leah - Leah of Hel, and Loki's kinda-ex - is worse.   She and Loki seem to be working with the same villain, although I doubt Loki is aware of this at the moment due to his initial reaction to seeing Leah.

And when asked how she knows her, when he explains the kinda-ex thing, he explains that he left her stranded at the beginning of time to save her from him.   He'd be terribly bad for her, you see.  I really hope more of this relationship is explored in the third and final volume, as it makes Loki more introspective than usual.   I think he might actually feel bad about abandoning Leah and that's kinda weird for him, but weird in a good way.   It's also going to be a pretty major grudge match between them, although it appears as she's the only one holding a grudge so far.   I also think she might just be an actual threat to Loki, and that ratchets up the tension far more than him fighting someone you know he can easily beat!

As far as diversity goes, other than what I mentioned for the first volume in my review here, there's a bisexual character.   And while America Chavez, or Miss America, was a wonderfully strong character, Leah - while a bit unstable - is such a strong personality I can't help but think she might be the highlight for me.   Her anger feels righteous, even when Teddy calls her a stalker - and you know he's right.   She comes off as a force of nature, with a human mind, human emotions, motivating her.

She's the highlight of this volume for me.   I'm hoping to see more of her in the future, as well, beyond this series.   I know my hope might be futile with the Secret Wars reboot on the horizon, but maybe past that?   Crossing fingers!
