Grimlock ♥ Ultra Magnus

I'm a well read grad student who's bluntly honest about all things, although I try to be most honest about myself.

This one is hard to rate

The Mighty Avengers, Vol. 1: The Ultron Initiative - Brian Michael Bendis, Frank Cho

For a multitude of reasons: I like a lot about this, and I tend to really love this author's work, but there's just some things that bug me.   I really like the general story arc, and some of the moments between some characters, and don't like other characters as much. I did, however, love the art that wasn't chicks riding phalli.

I'm also really flaky lately, so it's hard to stick to even one graphic novel.  I keep getting more and more exhausted, and so I feel like maybe I'm missing things.   But even so, I just was really surprised at how much I didn't like.   Bendis can do so much better, has done so consistently, and thus the why of him making some choices confuses me.

For example, he has characters swear constantly and while he usually does so and makes it seem natural, it just seems stilted, like it's to add to the word count or something.   I also have a hard time believing some of the characters act as petty as they do, with Mrs. Marvel - Carol Danvers - thinking that someone should just kill themselves if they can't do something, or the way that Janet snipes at her ex-husband about Ultron, and Tigra.   It all felt like it was there to shock, and thus distracted me from the story.

Overall, it was a letdown.   I'm going to continue on the series for now, just to see if volume two gets better.   If not, I'll go to the issues with The Vision and to hell with the rest of the series.
