I'm a well read grad student who's bluntly honest about all things, although I try to be most honest about myself.
Options on the editing: it was semi-edited. Someone confused proofreading with editing. The author hired a really bad editor, thought this was edited, and was just wrong. I think of this as semi-edited, much like a first draft of a book. The errors aren't systematic, but some are, quite frankly, cringe worthy.
And then there's Tyri and Quinn. Try, the human, is so pro-robot it isn't funny. She's like 'Holocaust! And Gulags! We're forcing them to live in Holocaust-Gulags!' I swear at one point it's like she just list the terrible shit humans have done to each other, and compares it to how the robots live/what we've done to the robots. It's so ham-fisted, it feels like those ham-fists are holding big ole hams and trying to beat me over the head with them until I agree.
Quinn is no better. Keep in mind that Sal is his mentor/mother figure and a very advanced AI, and Kit is his best friend and also has been forced into prostitution. (Kit continues prostituting himself to survive, and Quinn left his home because his owners were sadistic.)
Sal: Logical reasons we hate humans. Kill them all for persecuting us still!
Kit: Angry humans for doing all this shit to me and not even programming me to like the sick shit they do. Fuck them, fuck them all.
Long pause, then Quinn: But we're kinda little shits back, guys. Human rights!
I just can't even with this. I'm going to continue in the hopes that it gets better, but I'm so angry with this right now. Arguably, Quinn either has Stockholm Syndrome, is just victim blaming himself - and Kit and his own kind - so the romance will work, or a bit of both. But, yeah, I can't see this myself agreeing that, hey, the romance isn't forced.
Unless someone does try beating me over the head with actual hams. I think I might cave quickly. Or if I'm angry enough at this book, I'll just laugh until my head caves in. And even then, I'll probably just be relieved I don't have to finish this book.
