I'm a well read grad student who's bluntly honest about all things, although I try to be most honest about myself.
But seriously sad.
Steve has lost his family and he's not ready to be back in the field. But when another super soldier who's wearing the American flag on his face - it's painted on - starts destroying towns and killing off people in what seems to be an old grudge match, SHIELD decides that the world needs to see Captain America defeating the man.
Except that Nuke is working for a 'General', who is telling him to make it known that his boys, the soldiers he fought with in Vietnam, are brought home if they were left in foreign countries. (Or at least their bodies.) He's also told that everyone else, that losing the war, have made him, his boys, and his country look bad.
There's something touching about the way he cares so deeply, not about himself, or winning the war, or even his country, but about his fellow soldiers. It all ties into his origin story, or at least the origin story of his Nuke alter ego. But keep in mind that Steve has lost a lover, and a child that he considered a son, and now this new horror is shoved in his face.
I was hoping after Dimension Z that he would get some time to recover. After all, Dimension Z and that whole storyline? Pretty depressing, even though it was also amazing. I should have known better.
Still, this feels like a bit too much, and I suspect it'll get much, much worse before this is over. Poor Steve! I'm not sure I want to continue right now. Maybe another graphic novel to take my mind off this?
