I'm a well read grad student who's bluntly honest about all things, although I try to be most honest about myself.
There isn't all that much new here: the hard boiled detective? Done. Robot detective? Done. And yet, this is a lot of fun. A lot.
It gleefully skewers a lot of the tropes - stakeouts, dinners - by giving them small details like Robot Snax in the car for Jones, or the way the waitress at the diner gives him the same kind of crap you can her giving a human PI.
As far as the overall storyline, though, I didn't see any big breakthroughs as far as originality. It did, however, have a solid start, a solid storyline, and the art was not only quite beautiful, but it fit this world well.
And robots. There are lots and lots of robots. I'm willing to keep going with this and see if this was simply a bit of world-building, and it gets more original. Even if it doesn't, this is an absolute steal at a dollar a comic. Even if it's been there, done that, I'm willing to come back. Because on top of all the plusses of just being solid, I like Copernicus. He may be a bit of the seen-that-PI, but he's a robot, he's sympathetic so far, and I'd like to continue with him.
I'm off to see if Red Tornado #1 was as good. If so, I'll probably buy the rest of CJ and RT and read them tonight and tomorrow while it's blizzarding around me.
