I'm a well read grad student who's bluntly honest about all things, although I try to be most honest about myself.
If I had any complaint, it's that this was so short - and I'd argue that this had the potential for larger world building. How did Santa get so kickass? Why is he invoking Odin? How did the Reindeer get their martial arts skillz?
Of course, not all of the world building necessarily has to tie into the horror, nor the gore, but there was quite a bit of cheek-in-tongue humor along with the horror-n-gore, and both could easily be used to explore the past, and hows and whys.
That being said, it's a minor complaint. And given how generous E. is - and continues to be - with his freebies, it feels a bit like biting the hand that feeds you. Then again, E. has always wanted honesty in reviews of his work, and I'm a little torn here. The truth is that I felt that I wanted more exploration of this world, enough that when I sat back and thought about it, I was left very, very slightly unfulfilled. This was meant to be a short freebie, and a thank you to all his readers, and it showcases the best of his talents. And I sort of understand that this being his living, not wanting to create a whole novel to give away.
That being said, even having read this short, I would happily pay for a longer story that delved into this world a little more. I mean, I really, really want to read more. And I'm rambling and repeating myself, but like I said, I feel torn. I felt torn debating writing this review. And I ended up with honestly being the best policy: I feel this would be a better longer piece, because there is enough here to amuse and tease that I could easily see a little expansion - or a lot.
Still, it's really good, and it's still up on Amazon and free. It's totally worth the download. Download the Naughty List here.
