I'm a well read grad student who's bluntly honest about all things, although I try to be most honest about myself.
This was done with a bit more respect to the original culture than Shadowman was, in my opinion, while still being a bit problematic. Anytime someone writes a culture that they aren't intimately familiar with, it's hard to get all the details right.
The sense of honor seemed more to fit the story than the culture; it felt tacked on to people who didn't really feel all that different from what I'm used to, or Americans.
And the story was a little more convoluted than in the reboot, while there wasn't quite as much internal conflict with Rai. There was a chance to heighten the tension with his father, but it wasn't really played out as successfully as it could have been.
I enjoyed it more than I didn't enjoy it, though, so three and a half stars.
