Grimlock ♥ Ultra Magnus

I'm a well read grad student who's bluntly honest about all things, although I try to be most honest about myself.

Tropey fun with some issues

Fanboys VS. Zombies - Sam Humphries, Jerry Gaylord

Some of the tropes are just plain fun - the action hero who is a wuss in real life - and some are more problematic.   The insane Asian woman warrior princess.   She's also into the Otaku lifestyle, which may be problematic as well.    Also, while she's fun, there's nothing that makes her stand out so much that she feels three dimensional.   She does call herself a robot warrior princes when she's in a Mecha, but, yeah, still problematic.   Especially as she's dressed as a typical sex kitten.   Basically, it's a way to fetishize Asian women yet again, and when  you consider that her brother is a nerdy Asian man (who sleeps with Jenna, a white woman the main character and the brother fight over) who is shown as not an ideal partner because he's consistently called a jackass or something...

Well, it places his sister as a submissive object to be objectified.   She even calls Jenna boss at one point, and takes orders, no problems at all.   (She does fight back when people tell her to run, not fight.)

But there are other issues.   Like the fact that they beat the zombies and figure out how to beat the infection, but they have no background that would prepare them for this - nothing such as science degrees or black belts or swordsmanship are mentioned until the fight scenes.   This whole 'disaster strikes, and then we'll figure out to fight' annoys the crap out of me.   It's used often in horror and revenge stories, and it never rings true to me.

So, yeah, a quick, fun read with a couple witty lines, and I'll read the next volume that I got in the Humble Bundle, but I probably won't read further than that.
