I'm a well read grad student who's bluntly honest about all things, although I try to be most honest about myself.
Mandy is a little girl who doesn't show emotion. At all. When her big sister goes off to college, she's sad - but doesn't show it. Her sister's parting gift is a sketchbook and Mandy goes to a hill and draws and draws and draws out her emotions, using her favorite things - monsters!
But she's bottled up her emotions for so long, they come out through the monsters, who come to life. The only way to get them back in is by expressing the emotion each monster represents. At the end, Mandy learns that it's not only good, and satisfying, but also healthier if she expresses her emotions.
I can't tell you how cute this was! The art, yes, but also just the writing for this. And I don't care if there's some big lesson - showing feelings=okay - because it's not what I look for in books. But it's great for kids, and it wasn't so preachy that it bothered someone just looking for a good story.
One of the better offerings from the current Humble Bundle. Between this and I Was the Cat and Courtney Crumin, it's been totally worth it - but it's been all over the place. Some I loved, some I hated. This just happens to be one of the far superior titles, and it's so amazingly good!
