I'm a well read grad student who's bluntly honest about all things, although I try to be most honest about myself.
There's the 'I have a dreamland, but, y'know, not in a gay way,' to the slut shaming, to the mocking of the 'fat chick.' Yes, the storytelling is damaging, and yes, the art is good, and I suppose it tries to be empowering - but it's not. Yes, the women are smart and stand up for themselves - but there's never any backlash for the comments being made.
The one exception is the slut shaming in which Flamingo knows it's bullshit and escapes from that, at least somewhat. It doesn't help that escaping that small town, religious mentality means getting hooked up with someone who beats her and becoming a stripper until she has to be saved, yet again.
It tries to be empowering, but it's not.
