I'm a well read grad student who's bluntly honest about all things, although I try to be most honest about myself.
And still Valiant gives me a five-star read. Fast-paced, full of well rounded characters, character development, and surprising me all the way through, the only reason Eternal Warrior isn't my favorite of Valiant is that it lacks the snark of Archer and Armstrong, the violence of Bloodshot and the Mecha of X-O Manowar. In other words, this is amazing and brilliant, and while I could ask for more, that would just be greedy of me. Non-stop snark, ultra violence, and Mecha/robots/nanotechnology just wouldn't fit into this storyline.
I do love how Valiant is a world that is so tied together, and yet understandable even as stand-alone series, too. With each volume, I get a deeper understanding of the world that's been created, a deeply rich world that deserves such expansion and care.
This is more on the fantasy side of things, having to do with the world's gods - mother Earth plays a large role - and those humans, even immortal humans, who fight on her behalf. Or, y'know, against her.
Except that this is also somewhat in the foreground, but not the focus. The focus is a father and daughter and how they choose to fight what appears to be their destinies. And it's a really surprisingly touching and deep relationship given what you're first shown and what comes in this volume.
Highly recommended.
