Grimlock ♥ Ultra Magnus

I'm a well read grad student who's bluntly honest about all things, although I try to be most honest about myself.

Mediocre annual

Daredevil (2015-) Annual #1 - Charles Soule, Roger McKenzie, Vanesa R. Del Rey, Guillermo Sanna

I forgot to pick this up in paper format and got it for a dollar in a Comixology sale.   And meh, am I glad this wasn't something I paid more for because it's not as good as I expected. I was originally all in for this because of Echo, a deaf superhero.   She can often do things that Daredevil can't, especially if it affects his hearing.   Her deafness being a source of strength as sound is used against people and Maya (Echo's given name) is immune.

I felt the ending was anti-climatic and there's more to Maya than deafness.   What she endured, how strong she became, and her ability to mimic everything she sees weren't taken advantage of to their full potential or flat out misused.   (She saw the piano player who caused the sound-virus and wasn't able to mimic his finger movements.   Fail.    She can mimic anything immediately when she sees it, and for her not to get it the first try just to ratchet up the tension without an explanation was ridiculous.   Her commenting that something was partially blocking her view - like someone jumping in front of her - would have upheld the tension without overlooking that fact.)

I honestly can't even remember the backstory.  I just wasn't that into it.   Oh, right, it was a Melvin Potter/Gladiator story that didn't really do it for me.   The art was really nice, though, and it wasn't as disappointing as it could have been, just not as good as I'd been hoping.  Overall, I was happier than I was disappointed so three stars felt fair.
