I'm a well read grad student who's bluntly honest about all things, although I try to be most honest about myself.
Sometimes series are hobbled by crossovers, and this is the case here. I prefer the ones where I don't know what's happening because they are only tangentially tied to the event: it doesn't force me to read something I'm not interested in rather than the main series.
This, however, is another installment that has everything to do with an event I haven't read. And while one might argue that I'm simply being stubborn and should just read the event, it involves multiple characters I have little interest in and I tend to read series based on characters. Without a good percentage of characters I like, I don't feel involved.
That being said, I hate it when comic companies attempt to force me to tow the line and buy or read the event by shoehorning it into the main series. They don't have to do this; they don't do this with all the titles, and they could simply tell the story in the crossover. I don't respond well, or as Marvel would wish; I don't buy the crossover, and I avoid it if I'm that determined. I then complain when they force something I don't want into a series I love.
I've been dealing with this for decades, and I will continue to put up with it. I found things I loved in this series, like Rocket's grumbling about Earth. (He hates it and is hilarious about saying so.) Groot offering to give Rocket a hug is priceless. But it certainly wasn't that enjoyable a read to me: not a five or four star review.
