Grimlock ♥ Ultra Magnus

I'm a well read grad student who's bluntly honest about all things, although I try to be most honest about myself.

Perfection!

The Punisher (2016-) #1 - Declan Shalvey, Steve Dillon, Becky Cloonan

I was wary for a bunch of reasons: I wasn't that into the one series I'd read by this author, and I've only liked limited things this artist has done.

How would I like this, then?

Well, just fine.   It's a bit of a slow start, but that slow start not only comes together, it does so in a way that makes that slow start necessary.  You're seeing pieces that were being put into place for the last part of this issue, and for the next issue.

This was brutal and creepy, and it means that The Punisher will have a fight on his hands.   Even thought the lower downs didn't put up much of a challenge, their immediate boss - who answers to a bigger boss - seems extra freaky.   There's a reason he's called The Face, and it wasn't quite what I was expecting.   It's horrifying.   It's nightmare inducing, and I should have expect it, but I didn't.

I suspect The Face will be more clever, and thus more frightening.   Even the super-soldier type drug that the bad guys - and thus Punisher's fodder - were handing out didn't help them.  I suspect The Face will partake, and because he actually thinks before he does, he'll be a more formidable foe for The Punisher.

The deal with the cops, and Punisher screwing up their bust, won't endear them to him, and I wonder how that will come into play later on in the series.  I have no doubt it will come into play because too much time was spent on that issue for it not to come back.   If it doesn't come back, if it doesn't play an integral role in the story, then it was a waste of space in this comic.

I can say that I trust this author after this issue: the tone, the characters, the storyline were all perfect for a Punisher series.  I also forgot how much I like this artist when he's fit with the right story.   His style reminds me a bit of the grotesque, and the storyline has to be right for me to feel it's a good fit.   Grotesque in a Punisher story, though?   Oh, yes, please.

Looking forward to issue two.
