Grimlock ♥ Ultra Magnus

I'm a well read grad student who's bluntly honest about all things, although I try to be most honest about myself.

Not sure how to explain this...

Bee and PuppyCat #6 - Garrett Jackson, Natasha Allegri

Beyond the fact that these are interconnected, but vastly different, short stories - like a couple pages each - or how there's a bit of magical realism involved in Puppycat and what Bee does for a living as a magical temp, I'm at a loss to explain why I like this so much.

Maybe it's the fact that Bee also, magically, survives and is very optimistic and bright although she never really explains how she can survive and yet be so poor she can't really afford food at times.

There's something disarming, something charming and quirky.   Too much cute can grate on my nerves, make me dig for all the unexplainable aspects, all the bullshit, all the inconsistencies, and drag them out into the light for all to see.  And see, Bee and Puppycat are way, way too much cute.

The cynical part of me doesn't want to do any of what it usually does.   It doesn't want to tear apart why this doesn't make sense, possibly because this seems to acknowledge, or be aware, of it's own internal inconsistencies.   Bee can't afford take out, but her apartment seems to be rather lush.   And with a wink and a nod, this comic series ignores that.   See, it doesn't matter.   What does matter is Bee and Puppycat, who don't always show it, but are fiercely loyal to one another.   They're usually too busy living, and enjoying, life to have to fight food to feed one another, though.

So that cynical part of me is standing there, tilting its head, trying to figure out why I'm not pointing this shit out and laughing my ass off.   Why I am, instead, cooing over Puppycat.

And the thing is there's this not-so-secret part of me that needs this optimism.   I'm thinking - not so surprisingly - of Transformers, the IDW comics.   Particularly More Than Meets the Eye, especially Cyclonus and Tailgate.   (If you've read the last issue, you know why.)   Cyclonus, ever cynical, works for me because he's not overwhelming - because he cares deeply for Tailgate, and Tailgate is ever the optimist, and that balances Cyclonus out.   And this?   This is the Tailgate in my life, balancing out all that other cynical bullshit.

This review had taken a rather weird turn, although not nearly as weird as the stuff that happens in this comic.  So I also think this is a rather appropriate place to end this review.
